IMD Weather Update: Jammu And Kashmir Braces For Fresh Snowfall, To Bring Much-Needed Relief

In light of the forecast, the Met Department has advised farmers to halt agricultural activities for the week, including the spraying of fertilizers. Tourists are also encouraged to plan their travels accordingly, taking into account potential travel advisories due to weather conditions.

Jammu And Kashmir: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced an imminent spell of snowfall across various divisions of Jammu and Kashmir over the next three days, offering a glimmer of hope to residents who have endured an unusually dry winter. The Kashmir Valley, which has seen minimal precipitation during January and February, is set to experience much-needed moisture that could rejuvenate parched water bodies and springs.

Following a significant dry spell that led to the drying up of multiple water sources and triggered rampant forest fires, this upcoming wet weather is expected to bring cheer to the valley. January 2025 marked one of the driest ‘Chillai Kalan’ periods in decades, prompting the government to postpone the Khelo India Winter Games due to insufficient snow in popular ski resort Gulmarg.

Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the MeT Department, stated, “We anticipate a wet spell from February 25th to 28th. Tonight, moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in several areas, particularly in north and central Kashmir. By the 27th and 28th, we expect moderate to heavy snowfall in south Kashmir and higher reaches of the Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal. Some locations may experience very high snowfall.”

Experts warn that global warming is drastically altering weather patterns in the region, making this upcoming precipitation crucial for replenishing the water bodies that have dwindled alarmingly. The MeT department emphasizes that these next three days are vital for restoring the valley’s water resources ahead of the summer months.

“Jammu region is also expected to receive rain over the next couple of days. Travelers should heed traffic advisories and plan their journeys with caution,” Ahmad added. Popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are anticipated to receive fresh snowfall, potentially revitalizing tourism in the region after a sluggish winter season.
