India has witnessed its warmest October on record in 123 years due to minimum temperatures and significant changes in weather patterns across the country. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the country’s average minimum temperature for October was recorded at 21.85 degrees Celsius, against the normal of 20.01 degrees Celsius.
Contributing Weather Factors
Several weather phenomena reportedly contributed to the higher night temperatures. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, explained that the delayed exit of the southwest monsoon was responsible for the incoming monsoonal flow. Additionally, four low-pressure systems and the absence of western disturbances that could keep the temperatures under check – added to the higher-than-normal minimum temperatures during October, he said.
Cyclone Dana created havoc with heavy rainfall over Odisha and West Bengal last month. According to reports, the minimum temperatures in various regions has set new records since 1901:
North-West India (Monthly average) – 19.07°C
Central India (Monthly average) – 23.10°C
South Peninsular India (Monthly average) – 23.45°C

Rainfall Patterns And November Outlook
Eastern and northeastern regions reported 14.3% normal rainfall, while southern India saw 11.8% above normal, partly due to an active northeast monsoon.
It should remain fairly warm during November month with both daytime and nighttime temperatures remaining above normal across the country. Nights are reportedly expected to be warmer than normal except for northwest India, where daytime temperatures may go back to normal or even below that.
However, IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning for southern states, including Kerala & Mahe and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal for October 3.
