In a disturbing incident, a 28-year-old PhD student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) was allegedly found dead in her hostel room on Thursday, police said. According to media reports, the girl took her life by hanging herself from the ceiling hook. This is the fourth such case in the institute in the last 11 months.

An official privy involved in the investigation stated that the rope used for suicide had been purchased online. On Thursday morning, when she didn’t show up for classes, her friends tried to contact her through the phone but received no response after several tries, reports stated. Following this, her hostel mates told the institute’s authorities, who immediately alerted the police. Her body has been sent for post-mortem examination, in the presence of her family members.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijendra Dwivedi said in a statement, “The security administration of IIT Kanpur, located in the Kalyanpur area, reported that a female student has committed suicide by hanging herself. Police and the field unit arrived at the scene and conducted all necessary legal proceedings under videography. A suicide note was also found at the scene, in which the deceased did not blame anyone for the incident. The body has been sent to the morgue in the presence of family members, and other necessary legal actions are being taken”

In a statement, IIT-K said, “A police forensic team arrived on the campus to examine the circumstances surrounding her death. The institute is awaiting the findings of the investigation to ascertain the cause. The institute extends its deepest condolences to the promising young researcher and prays for strength and comfort for her family and friends during this difficult time.”
