IIT Kanpur: PhD Student Dies By Suicide, Leaves 3-Page Note – Why Did A Topper With Rs 37,000 Fellowship End Life?

Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Pratik Sen stated that Yadav was last spotted on Sunday night around 10.30. He noted that he neither took part in counseling sessions at the institute nor was reported as depressed.

Kanpur: In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old Ph.D. student, studying at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur tragically died by suicide in his hostel room. The deceased, identified as Ankit Yadav, from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was a first-year PhD scholar in the Dept. of Chemistry. The incident unfolded yesterday evening when his calls went unanswered. His friends sensed something wrong and immediately alerted the authorities who rushed to his room.

Additional DCP (West), Vijendra Dwivedi informed that Yadav’s Hostel room’s door had to be broken to recover his body. They found a three-page suicide note there which revealed he took the extreme step out of his own free will. His body was later sent for a post-mortem examination and his family was also informed.

According to media reports, Yadav was pursuing his PhD studies under Prof. Paritosh Sarthi Subramaniam and was a brilliant student. He earned himself a 5-year fellowship from UGC and reportedly receives Rs 37,000 monthly amount for the first 2 years. Additionally, he gets Rs 41,000 for the remaining 3 years.

Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Pratik Sen stated that Yadav was last spotted on Sunday night around 10.30 pm. He noted that he neither took part in counseling sessions at the institute nor was reported as depressed. Though he did not blame anyone in his suicide note, the reason why he hanged himself is yet to be ascertained. His mobile and laptop were seized and a probe is underway, Amar Ujala reports.
