A road accident occurred early Friday morning in the Chinnatekur area of Kallur Mandal in Kurnool district, when a Kaveri Travels bus traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru suddenly caught fire. The entire bus was reduced to ashes within minutes of the tragedy.
Updates have revealed that around 40 passengers were on the bus when the fire broke out. According to the district collector, 12 people were able to escape through the emergency window of the burning vehicle; therefore, the bus quickly left, leaving the others to meet their grim fate. Further investigations have revealed that close to 20 are feared dead in the accident.
As per the preliminary information received about the incident, the bus collided with a two-wheeler on the highway, causing a fire. Several travelers managed to escape through the emergency exit, while several others are feared dead. The accident also led to a traffic jam on the highway. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and are trying to determine the total number of passengers on board the bus.
Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav spoke about the accident, stating that DNA samples are currently being collected to identify the deceased. He further highlighted the support of the Superintendent of Kurnool Government Hospital in providing the best medical care to the injured.
Arrangements are being made for an on-site postmortem, and a team of forensic doctors has been assigned to attend to the accident. Currently, 11 people have been admitted to the government hospital and 3 to a private hospital.
Several videos of the accident have spread rapidly across the internet. Officials have stated that the exact death toll will be confirmed only after investigations and DNA reports. The accident has raised serious questions about safety standards in long-distance bus operations.
