The Kolkata Police have summoned the Assistant Superintendent and the Head of the Chest Medicine Department of RG Kar Hospital for questioning in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the government-run hospital. The incident occurred last week, and the officials are scheduled to appear at the Kolkata Police headquarters at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13.
Initial Investigation and Summons
According to sources, the Assistant Superintendent was the first to inform the victim’s family, stating that the 31-year-old trainee doctor had died by suicide within the hospital premises. However, further investigation revealed that she had been raped and murdered. The police have already questioned seven junior doctors, including interns, house staff, and postgraduate trainees, who were reportedly with the victim for dinner hours before the crime occurred.
Ongoing Investigation and Arrest
The victim’s body was discovered in a seminar hall at RG Kar Hospital on the morning of August 9. Following the discovery, a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy was arrested in connection with the crime. He has since been charged under Sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS and has been remanded to police custody until August 23 by Sealdah court.

Administrative Shake-Up
The incident has led to significant backlash, resulting in the resignation of Sandip Ghosh, Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, from his post and government service. This came shortly after the West Bengal government removed Medical Superintendent-cum-Vice-Principal Sanjay Vashisth, replacing him with Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, who has taken on additional responsibilities as superintendent.
Autopsy Report Details
A four-page autopsy report revealed disturbing details about the victim’s injuries, indicating that she was subjected to severe violence. The report noted that the victim had injuries on her face, abdomen, leg, neck, hand, and lips, with bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. The findings suggested homicidal injuries, including antemortem fractures and signs of sexual penetration. The report concluded that the victim was killed by throttling and smothering between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday morning.
The investigation is ongoing, and more doctors from RG Kar Hospital may be summoned for questioning in the coming days.
