HMPV Virus: Does Your Travel Insurance Cover HMPV?

Travel insurance policies generally cover medical emergencies and related treatments for sudden injuries and illnesses. People can receive financial assistance or cashless provisions even if they contract HMPV or other viral infections during their trip.

However, the scope of coverage in travel insurance policies may vary between companies and individuals. It also depends on the terms and packages selected when finalizing the insurance. Therefore, travelers must carefully review their policy before making a decision. Ensure that the policy you choose covers common illnesses and potential emergencies. Most travel insurance policies in India provide coverage for medical emergencies, including those caused by viral infections like HMPV.

How to address a medical emergency during a foreign trip?

The insurance industry has been experiencing significant growth in recent years. To promote their individual products, many providers now offer 24/7 customer assistance. This initiative has streamlined processes, making it easier for customers to navigate procedures and formalities, from filing claims to patient discharge. It has also enabled individuals to locate the nearest network hospital for emergency treatment and access other essential services, especially during foreign or holiday trips. However, since terms and conditions vary between providers, it is crucial to carefully review policy details before purchasing. Opting for a policy through an aggregator can also prove beneficial, particularly when filing claims or accessing benefits.

HMPV Virus and Outbreak in India

A total of eight cases of HMPV have been reported in India so far, including two cases in Bengaluru, one in Gujarat, two suspected cases in Nagpur, and two cases in Tamil Nadu. Earlier on Tuesday, a six-month-old baby reportedly tested positive for the virus in Mumbai. The Union Health Ministry confirms that HMPV has been circulating both in India and globally.

Symptoms of HMPV

Symptoms typically include cough, fever, sore throat, and nasal congestion. In some cases, individuals may also experience wheezing or shortness of breath. While the virus usually causes mild illness, certain groups, such as the very young, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems, may develop more severe respiratory conditions like pneumonia or bronchiolitis.

Reinforce Mask-Wearing, Monitor Symptoms

The former WHO chief scientist has emphasized the importance of wearing masks, a practice widely enforced during 2020-21 to minimize the spread of COVID-19. In addition to wearing masks, staying hydrated and maintaining proper hand and face hygiene are essential precautionary measures to reduce the risk of infection. The expert also recommends consuming Vitamin C and seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms of HMPV arise. Warning signs such as breathlessness, persistent coughing, inability to eat, and vomiting should not be ignored and warrant immediate consultation with a doctor.
