India has recorded Three new cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) as of Tuesday, counting the total number of cases in the country to seven. The latest cases were detected in Nagpur, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Salem.
How Much HMPV Testing Costs ?
HMPV testing involves advanced diagnostic methods, such as the BioFire panel, which can identify multiple pathogens, including HMPV, in a single test. Private labs across India offer this testing, with prices ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 for an HMPV-specific RT-PCR test. Prominent labs, including Dr Lal PathLabs, Tata 1mg Labs, and Max Healthcare Lab, provide these services. Samples are generally collected through nasopharyngeal swabs, sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).
In some cases, a comprehensive test package, which may include testing for multiple viruses such as Adenovirus,Coronavirus 229E, and Coronavirus HKU1, could cost up to Rs 20,000.
About HMPV
Human Metapneumovirus, first identified in 2001, is a globally circulating respiratory pathogen, particularly affecting children under five. Most children experience at least one infection by this age.
According to doctors, HMPV primarily targets the respiratory system, causing symptoms similar to a cold, including nasal congestion, sore throat, and cough. It is particularly concerning for vulnerable populations, including young children and the elderly, whose immune systems may be weaker. Severe cases can lead to pneumonia or respiratory distress.
Symptoms Of HMPV
In healthy adults, HMPV usually causes mild cold-like symptoms such as a sore throat, nasal congestion, and low-grade fever. However, in older adults or those with weakened immune systems, the virus can lead to more severe respiratory issues, including wheezing and shortness of breath.
In infants and young children, symptoms can escalate to more severe manifestations like rapid breathing, visible chest muscle use, and cyanosis (a bluish tint to the lips or fingers). If left untreated, HMPV may progress to bronchiolitis or pneumonia, highlighting the importance of early intervention.
Treatment For HMPV
There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. Most individuals with mild symptoms can recover at home with supportive care. In more severe cases, hospitalization may be required for oxygen therapy.
Preventive Measures
While HMPV poses risks, particularly for vulnerable populations, experts reassure the public that there is no need for panic. “HMPV is not a cause for widespread concern, advising people to take standard precautions such as wearing masks, frequent handwashing, and avoiding crowded areas.” according to Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO)
To Reduce The Spread Of HMPV, Individuals Are Advised To:
Wash hands regularly or use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Avoid close contact with individuals showing respiratory symptoms.
Wear masks in crowded settings.
Regularly disinfect surfaces.
Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen, particularly signs like wheezing or shortness of breath.
