Noida: A comprehensive plan has been prepared to save, beautify, and develop the land along the Hindon River in Noida, making it the largest plan to date. This plan includes approximately 2971 hectares of land along National Highway 9 to the Noida-Greno Expressway. Of this, around 2911 hectares of land are proposed to be developed by reclaiming land.

The Noida Authority has begun studying this plan. It is proposed that the project will be developed in three phases, with an estimated total cost of around 29,000 crore rupees. The value of the land to be acquired is estimated to be double this amount. It remains to be seen what decision the Noida Authority will take after the study. The plan has been named the Hindon Floodplain Development.

10,000 Families to be Displaced

Illegal encroachments are rapidly increasing along the Hindon Riverbank after the construction of embankments. The land along the riverbank belongs to the Irrigation Department, and it is also part of the Authority’s notified area, where several villages have vacant land. The plan is to channel the Hindon River and develop a riverfront, followed by the development of the land that will become available.

Approximately 375 hectares of land is available near the river, including 135 hectares of Irrigation Department land and around 300 hectares of government land. Additional land will need to be purchased from farmers, which is expected to cost about 1,500 crore rupees.

There are also plans to identify and relocate the families who have built homes in the flood zone. It is estimated that there are about 10,000 such families, and relocating them will cost approximately 4,000 crore rupees.

6-Lane Road and 12 Flyovers to be constructed along with the embankment

The Irrigation Department has already constructed an embankment along the Hindon River from Chijarsi to the National Highway. The proposed plan includes improving connectivity and development of the land to be acquired.

It suggests constructing a 6-lane road along the embankment and building 12 flyovers over the existing small and large roads in the area. The estimated cost for building the 6-lane road is around 625 crore rupees, and the cost for constructing the 12 flyovers is approximately 150 crore rupees. These flyovers will not be very large.

Estimated Cost of 380 Crore Rupees for Revamping the Hindon River

The project proposes to first excavate the banks of the Hindon River to reshape it and then channel it by constructing a diaphragm wall. Additionally, soil filling will also be required. The estimated cost for this work is approximately 380 crore rupees.

Why This Plan is Essential for Noida?

The population in the city is increasing, and only a few sectors along the expressway are left for development. The Authority has very little land remaining, and if the vacant land along the Hindon River is not developed in a planned manner, encroachment will continue to grow, putting the future of the river at risk.

With plots already reaching the riverbank, any future rise in the river’s water level could lead to a major disaster for a large population. Therefore, the Authority, the Irrigation Department, and the administration must recognize the importance of this project. If initiated, this project will be a significant decision for the city’s future.
