New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice on a plea seeking stay on Karnataka High Court judgement of upholding Hijab ban. The top court has listed the matter on September 5 for next hearing.
A batch of petitions was filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Karnataka High Court verdict that upheld the state government’s ban on hijab in educational premises.
The Karnataka HC ruled that wearing hijab by Muslim women is not an essential religious practice.

The hijab issue was taken up on the first day of UU Lalit as the new Chief Justice of India.

During the tenure of former CJI NV Ramana, the matter was raised up multiple times but it was never listed for hearing. He had even promised to form a committee soon which did not happen.
