New Delhi: Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that micro-blogging platform Twitter will have to follow the laws made by the local governments to continue existing in the respective countries.

“Twitter does not have a choice but to obey local governments. If we don’t obey local government laws, we will get shut down so the best we can do is to work close to the law in any given country, it is impossible for us to do more than that,” said Musk after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“We will do our best to provide free speech that is possible under the law,” he added.

Musk’s remarks speak volume about the Twitter’s approach in India as it has been landed into political controversies several times in the past.

In the latest, Twitter faced a backlash when former CEO Jack Dorsey said that the ‘Indian government made several requests’ to restrict content on the farmers’ protest carried out in 2021.

In an interview, Dorsey asserted that  “And this is India, a democratic country.” Dorsey said, , “India for example, India is one of the countries which had many requests around farmers protests, around particular journalists which were critical of the government, and it manifested in ways such as ‘we will shut Twitter down in India’… ‘we would raid the homes of your employees’, which they did; ‘we will shut down your offices if you don’t follow suit’.”

However, such allegations were turned down by the Centre, sparking a controversy.
