Haryana Assembly Elections: Until Thursday morning, the BJP’s Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal’s mother Savitri Jindal was seeking a party ticket for the Haryana Assembly elections. Later in the day, she filed her nomination as an Independent candidate from the Hisar seat.
Who Is Savitri Jindal?
74-year-old Savitri Jindal, wife of late industrialist O P Jindal, joined the election race on the final day for filing nominations against Haryana Minister and sitting Hisar MLA Kamal Gupta.
This year, Forbes India declared her as the richest woman in the country, with a net worth of $29.1 billion.
Voting for the 90 Assembly seats of Haryana will be held on October 5 and results will come on October 8.

After filing her nomination, she said, “I am committed to the development and transformation of Hisar. The people of Hisar are my family, and my late husband Om Prakash Jindal helped create this bonding.”
The Jindal family has always served Hisar. I am committed to meeting the people’s expectations and keeping their trust,” Savitri Jindal, 59, said.
Jindal Defends Independent Bid, Highlights Past Political Roles
When asked whether contesting an election against the ruling party’s candidate, Kamal Gupta, would be seen as rebelliousness, she said, “It won’t be seen that way. I only campaigned for my son, Naveen Jindal, in the Lok Sabha elections and haven’t joined the BJP.”
She was twice elected an MLA from Hisar. In 2005, she represented Hisar in Haryana Assembly as a Congress MLA and was re-elected in 2009. In 2013, she was made a minister in Singh Hooda government. In March this year, she joined the BJP after her son Naveen Jindal quit Congress.
