The picturesque ski resort of Gulmarg is gearing up to host the highly anticipated Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 from March 9 to 12, following a significant boost from recent snowfall. Originally slated for February 22 to 25, the event was postponed due to insufficient snow cover, but the region’s weather has since transformed, ensuring optimal conditions for winter sports.
The decision to reschedule the games was influenced by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who advocated for a delay to early March to avoid further complications. His suggestion proved timely, as Gulmarg received an impressive 113 cm of snow between February 25 and 28, revitalizing the slopes for athletes and organizers alike.
The Khelo India Winter Games 2025 will showcase a variety of winter sports disciplines, including Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Ski Mountaineering, and Snowboarding. Events will be held at various stunning locations throughout Gulmarg, renowned for its exceptional skiing facilities and breathtaking natural beauty.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council, approximately 1,000 athletes and officials from around 30 teams across India are expected to participate in this prestigious event. The KIWG is set to attract national attention as elite athletes demonstrate their skills against the backdrop of Gulmarg’s majestic mountains.
In addition to the preparations for the Winter Games, the Kashmir Valley has been experiencing a mix of rainfall and snowfall, contributing to cooler temperatures. On Monday morning, moderate rain fell in the plains while light snowfall blanketed the mountainous areas. Meteorological Director Mukhtar Ahmad noted that light to moderate precipitation is expected across most regions, with higher elevations possibly receiving heavier snowfall. However, a return to stable weather conditions is anticipated starting Tuesday, March 5, with another spell of rain and snow forecasted for March 10 to 12.
