Mumbai: Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari continued to face backlash over his Gujarati-Marathi remarks. In the latest, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Sunday said “don’t agree with Governor’s statement.”

Said the Deputy Chief Minister: “I don’t agree with Governor’s statement. Marathi people have contributed to process of development of Maharashtra.”

“Many other people involved in this development journey but importance of Marathi people cannot diminish,” he added.

A day earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also reacted upon the controversy sparked with controversial remarks of the governor. He said the governor should have spoken within “ethics of constitution”.

He said, “Governor has his own personal views but we won’t support his statements. Governor’s post is a constitutional post. He must speak under the ethics of the constitution.”

“We will never forget Mumbaikar’s and Marathi people’s contribution to Mumbai,” he added.

The remarks of Governor Koshiyari has upset many political leaders and outfits. The latter have been accusing the governor of “insulting hard working Marathi people”.

Meanwhile, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday also joined the controversy erupted this morning (July 30) with the governor’s comments.

“Now Marathi Manoos is being insulted in Maharashtra itself,” said Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray.

He had said, “If Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from Maharashtra, especially Mumbai and Thane, no money would be left here. Mumbai would not be able to remain the financial capital of the country.”
