The protest was staged after a Class 10 student from Ahmedabad died of his injuries a day after being stabbed by a junior inside the school premises following an altercation. The news of his death has sparked protests outside the school situated in Ahmedabad’s Khokhra. A First Information Report has been registered, and the accused, a minor, has been arrested under the Juvenile Act.
According to media reports, the victim was about to leave the school premises when an altercation broke out between him and a few of his juniors. After a verbal spat, the students got involved in a scuffle, during which a Class 8 student stabbed the senior and fled the scene.
In CCTV footage, Nayan, can be seen walking into the school with his hand on his stomach, covering the wound. After the attack, he was immediately taken to a private hospital in Maninagar, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The accused, while fleeing the scene, was spotted running towards the backside of the school. He was seen by the security guard, who informed the school administration and the police.
Police have registered a case of attempt to murder and arrested the minor accused in the case. They have also obtained CCTV footage and recorded statements of other students present at the time of the incident.
The protest escalated quickly when the parents of the victim and ABVP workers reportedly vandalised the school building and property, and even assaulted the school staff.
Amid the uproar, State Education Minister Prafulbhai Panseriya expressed condolences to Nayan’s family and urged protesting parents to maintain peace. Mr. Panseriya assured that justice will be served and also floated the idea of conducting a study on rising crime among children.
