Gujarat: In a shocking incident, a medical student died after he was made to stand for three hours during ragging by seniors. The incident has been reported from Patan district of Gujarat on Saturday. The 18-year-old deceased was first-year student of medical college based in Patan.
The deceased has been identified as Anil Methaniya, MBBS student at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur-Patan. He was native of Jesda village in Surendranagar district. According to reports, Anil was made to stand for three hours by the third-year students at the hostel. This was a part of ‘introduction’, where a group of seniors made some juniors to stand and introduce themselves.
During this Anil felt unconscious and collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital where efforts were made to revive him but he died. Police have registered case of accidental death after post-mortem.
‘Forced To Stand’ Says Fellow Student
A college student told TOI that they were forced to stand and introduce themselves. “They forced us to keep standing and asked us not to get agitated. A student who was standing with us fell unconscious. We rushed him to a hospital where he died,” said the student.
Anil’s cousin, Dharmendra said that the family had received a call from the college and were told that Anil had collapsed and was hospitalised. Dharmendra and family reached the hospital where they found Anil dead. He has demanded justice from the college and authorities.
Gujarat Ragging Case: Dean Assures Action
As per reports, Dean of GMERS Hospital Dharpur-Patan, Hardik Shah has assured of strict action. He mentioned that the institute has launched investigation and disciplinary action will be taken against senior students, if found guilty. Police on Sunday informed that they have sought details from the anti-ragging committee of the college.
Police is investigating the case and further action will be taken based on the findings.
