It is said that a story can inspire people and especially if it’s a movie, then it gets rooted psychologically. While some people might take inspiration for positive change others can misuse to hatch a plot and commit crime in the society. One such case has come to light from Nadiad city of Gujarat, where a couple allegedly murdered their neighbor for a gold chain. Interestingly, the crime is said to have been influenced by 2015 movie Drishyam, a Hindi-language crime thriller film directed by Nishikant Kamat. To escape the murder charge, the couple used a plan which was executed by the protagonist in the film. They hatched their story on similar lines.

How Did The Couple Commit Crime?

The couple identified as Jaydeep Soni and Lata plotted the murder to reduce their financial crisis. They invited their 29-year-old neighbor Saumiya to their home on 28 September. For this they made an excuse to discuss some recipe. As per the Indian Express report, where they quoted Nadiad Rural Police inspector Inspector JH Vaghela, the couple smothered Saumiya once she entered the house, and then struck her with a blunt object and killed her. After killing her, they stuffed her body into a jute bag and transported it to the Mahi canal on two-wheeler, where they threw her body. The couple stole Saumiya’s gold chain of 70 grams and sold it for about Rs 3 lakh.

After the whole incident, the couple resumed to their normal lives and used the money to buy new clothes for their children and a two-wheeler.

How Did The Police Uncover Their Story

However, they were caught by the police this week after Saumiya’s husband filed a missing person report. The investigation was carried and her body was recovered from Mahi Canal on 30th September. Post-mortem report mentioned drowning as the cause of her death.

Police interrogated Jaydeep Soni and Lata, but noticed lack of consistency in their statements. Trying to escape the eyes of investigation, the couple told police that they were travelling when the incident occurred. To support their claims, the couple even provided bus tickets.

But their misleading claims were busted by police as they recovered CCTV footage which showed the couple on two-wheeler carrying a sack to the Mahi Canal, which raised suspicion on their travel story. Further investigation into the case, gradually revealed that the deceased often used to visit the couple’s place to discuss food as they ran a tiffin service. After reconstructing the events and findings, police arrested the couple and debunked their fake story.

Inspector JH Vaghela told Indian Express, “The accused knew that the woman was alone at home until her husband returned late. On that day, they called her to their home on the pretext of discussing a recipe and while she was in the kitchen, they smothered her and then hit her with a blunt object on her head.”
