Enraged over his sister’s relationship, a 29-year-old man allegedly raped his 22-year-old sister and inflicted cigarette burns on her body in Gujarat, Bhavnagar, police said, adding that the case was reported at a local police station after the survivor somehow gathered courage and dialed the state women’s commission helpline number. The suspect was arrested.
Police said the suspect, who resides in Bhavnagar, is a driver by profession. He is married. The suspect came to know that his younger sister had been in a relationship with a man from her same village for the past three years, said police, adding that instead of accepting her relationship, the man started blackmailing her.
On July 13, when the suspect’s wife had gone to visit her parents’ home, he allegedly threatened her sister and outraged her modesty at knifepoint. After one and a half months, later on August 22, when the suspect’s wife was again out for some work, he repeated the assault and burned her right thigh using a cigarette.
Fedup with repeated assault and blackmail, the woman somehow gathered courage and approached the state women’s commission through a helpline number. As the incident came to the fore, the commission stepped in and reported the case to a local police station.
Subsequently, a case of rape was registered against the suspect brother, and he was arrested, said police, adding the woman’s medical examination was also conducted, and a knife plus other evidence was collected from the suspect’s home. Police said further investigation is underway.
