During intense monsoon rains, the canopy at the passenger pick-up and drop-off zone outside Rajkot International Airport collapsed on Saturday. There have been no reported injuries thus far.

The weather office reported on Friday that a cyclonic circulation is active over south Gujarat, resulting in widespread rainfall across various parts of the state. They also forecasted that the rainy conditions would persist for the next five days.

Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘yellow alert’ for south Gujarat for Saturday, indicating the likelihood of heavy showers in the region.

The recent incident follows a tragic canopy collapse at Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, resulting in the death of one cab driver and injuries to eight others. Officials reported that the collapse occurred around 5:00 am on Friday, attributing it to heavy rainfall throughout the morning. “A section of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed due to heavy rain since early morning,” officials stated.

Following the tragic incident, authorities promptly responded, with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu forming a team to investigate the cause of the collapse. Meanwhile, rescue efforts were initiated, and a spokesperson from DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited) reported that all departures were temporarily halted, and check-in counters were closed as a precautionary measure for safety.

Later in the evening, Minister Naidu visited the site and attributed the collapse of the canopy to heavy rainfall. Describing the incident as “serious,” he announced compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, he declared compensation of Rs 3 lakh for the injured individuals.
