Guards assualt 4 Keralites in MP’s Tribal university over ‘trivial offence’; Shashi Tharoor, CPI-M demand immediate action

New Delhi: Congress leader and Thirvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor demanded an inquiry in a matter related to assault of four Keralite students in Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) in Madhya Pradesh’s Amarkantak.

In a Twitter post, the Congress MP said, “Shocked to learn of such brutality against students for an inadvertent and trivial offence within their own university precincts. I stand on solidarity with the Tribal University students and demand full accountability from those who behaved so monstrously with admin’s complicity.”

The four Malayali students were allegedly beaten by a group of security staff for posing near a water tank in the varsity’s campus on Saturday. As per the media reports, the students were also subjected to racial abuse as they were called “Keralawala” and “South Indian” before being attacked.

Nasheel KT, Abhishek R, Adnan, Adil are the final year students of MSW. The group of students was returning to their hostel when they stopped near a water tank to click pictures that close to the main gate, which is reportedly a restricted area.
However, several media reports also say that the victims did not know that the area was off limits as there were no sign boards.
The guards nearby approached them and asked for their IDs. After having a look at their cards, the guards enagagged in an argument and started hurling racial comments. The argument turned into an assault within no time, claimed one of the victims.

CPI-M leader writes to Union Minister 

Meanwhile, CPI-M leader John Brittas has sought wrote a letter to Union Edcucation Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urging the latter to intervene in the matter that is based on a “trivial issue”.
The CPI-M claimed that this is one of the “glaring episodes” of racial attacks against Keralites.
“It is also learnt that this latest vicious onslaught against the Keralite students has been an another glaring episode of the organized series of hostile actions against the Keralite students who are being targeted for their regional, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds,” he said in the letter.
