In Greater Noida’s Dankaur two sisters escaped their home just days prior to their scheduled arranged marriages. The weddings were to take place on April 14, and all the arrangements had been finalized, including sending out invitation cards to relatives.
Police said, the grooms chosen by the family were much older than the brides, and even the grooms themselves were not keen on the match. This has allegedly prompted the sisters to elope from their home with their male friends, who were tenants residing in the same house.
The two young men were accused by the family of luring and persuading the girls to elope. The police quickly tracked the sisters and their male friends to Sambhal district and arrested all four on Monday night.
Under police interrogation, the sisters produced the fact that they had consented to being wedded in a temple with the two men and had returned home. They wished to remain with their husbands. The revelation came as a shock to the family, who had already made all arrangements for the weddings.
Police said that the two sisters are adults and will be brought before a magistrate. The next step will be decided depending on their testimonies. The case has generated widespread interest, bringing to the fore issues of arranged marriages, age differences, and human rights in personal relationships.
