New Delhi: Amid the surge of onion prices in the country, Centre on Saturday imposed a whopping 40 percent duty on the export of onions till December 31 this year.

The increased duty on export of onions is effective immediately, it said.

Amid increasing onion prices this month, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that tomato prices have also gone up on average in August. However, recent data suggests a slight decrease in tomato rates.

The prices of onions and potatoes also saw a sequential increase, as per the RBI bulletin released on Thursday.

The rise in onion prices is expected to continue in September as well.
