In a significant step on Thursday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced the approval of Aadhaar-enabled face authentication for mobile apps of private entities. This initiative is aimed at providing easy access to various services to customers, particularly through apps. The move syncs with the launch of the Aadhaar Good Governance portal to streamline the approval process for Aadhaar authentication requests. In a press release, the Government stated, “This is in sync with an effort to make Aadhaar more people-friendly, enable ease of living, and enable better access to services for people.”

The online portal (http://swik.meity.gov.in) was created after amendments were made to the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Amendment Rules in late January 2025. According to an official statement, this new system allows Aadhaar number holders to avail of hassle-free ‘services from several sectors – hospitality, e-commerce players, educational institutions, healthcare, credit rating bureau, and aggregator service providers.’ Additionally, the fresh amendments can benefit the service providers in a range of ways, including e-KYC verification, exam registrations, staff attendance, customer onboarding, and more.
Step-By-Step Guide For Authentication Requests
In the press release, the IT Ministry mentioned that the portal will serve as a resource guide. It will offer a detailed SOP to authentication-seeking entities on how to apply and onboard for Aadhaar authentication. “Face Authentication may also be integrated in the customer facing apps of private entities, which will enable anytime anywhere, authentication,” it stated.
