Google Alerts 2.5 Billion Gmail Users
Reportedly, a hacking group called ShinyHunters is targeting Gmail accounts. The group, named a after a concept from the Pokemon franchise has been active since 2020. It is linked to major data breaches at companies like AT&T, Microsoft, Santander, and Ticketmaster, according to SILIVE.com. They often use phishing emails to deceive users into visiting fake login pages and tick users into revealing sensitive information like two-step verification (2SV) codes. Therefore, the users have been advised to create strong and unique passwords for their Gmail acocunts.
According to Google, ShinyHunters has taken advantage of the recent data leak. They are now targeting Gmail users through social engineering attacks i.e. fraudulent methods. This includes incidents like stealing passwords by posing as IT support staff. In many cases, hackers have also been successful in intruding into accounts.
Google, in a June blog post stated, “We believe threat actors using the ‘ShinyHunters’ brand may be preparing to escalate their extortion tactics by launching a data leak site (DLS).” Moreover, on August 8, Google emailed all likely affected users, and advised them to enhance their account security.
What Has Google Advised? How To Stay Protected
