Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the policy aims to attract people to electric vehicles in large numbers as these vehicles play an important role in reducing pollution and reducing dependence on conventional fuels.

With an aim to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and popularise eco-friendly transport, the Maharashtra government has announced a complete abolition of toll charges for EVs on several important highways in the state. The policy comes into effect from midnight of August 23, 2025 and includes several major toll roads across the state, including Atal Setu, Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg.

Who Will Get The Benefit?

According to the notification issued under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958, this exemption will be applicable to the following vehicles:

All electric four-wheelers (M1 category): These include both private and commercial vehicles

Electric buses (M3 and M4 category): which are being run by the State Transport Corporation or private operators

This will directly benefit private EV owners, app-based taxi services and passengers traveling in electric buses, who will now be free from paying toll on these select routes.

Major Highways Covered

The toll waiver under this policy has been implemented on the following major routes:

Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link)

Mumbai–Pune Expressway

Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway)

Apart from these, several other toll plazas across the state have also been included in the scheme, which will increase the utility and popularity of EVs for long-distance and inter-city travel.

The abolition of toll fees is expected to significantly reduce the operating costs of electric vehicles, making the adoption of EVs even easier and more viable. The government is confident that this decision will lead to faster adoption of electric vehicles in both urban and rural areas of Maharashtra.

Now commuters will be able to experience a clean, affordable and eco-friendly journey on major routes of the state. This decision not only reflects the state's commitment towards fighting climate change, but is also a strong step towards a long-term, sustainable transport system.
