The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has chosen to enlist professional agencies for managing the collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) throughout the city.
The project works to solve the increasing e-waste issue that exists in the local population of about 10 lakh residents who live in Greater Noida. The growing quantity of electronic waste generation has become more significant, leading to environmental risks and health threats during improper management.
The chosen agencies will offer pickup services for electronic waste from every sector, including daily households, together with businesses and institutions, and heavy industries throughout every neighborhood.
The project agencies must carry out waste collection at designated locations and maintain complete records about the waste while launching IT systems, including CCTV and data monitoring software, and digital weighing systems.
Only authorised recyclers are permitted to receive all types of e-waste that have been collected. Every waste provider must receive from agencies at pickup time a written document confirming the waste type and amount picked up, together with any money or value given back to the provider. The agencies must prepare monthly reports for GNIDA regarding processed e-waste quantities and utilized technology.
The selected agency will establish a helpline combined with a call center that lets residents and RWAs request pickup service. The selected agencies must fulfill these requests within three days. A failure to respond to requests within three days will result in penalties amounting to Rs 2,000 per day for the agency. GNIDA declared it will not offer any financial support for the initiatives. Agencies need to work independently with self-sustaining operations to generate profits through material sales or their partnerships with producers under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Companies seeking an appointment for waste processing operations must have their qualification approved for one year that may continue based on their performance outcomes.
According to officials, GNIDA has launched an initiative to establish a structured and effective e-waste disposal system to promote cleaner and safer urban living. To this end, it has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI), inviting applications from eligible entities. Released on April 29, the EoI is open to firms, NGOs, and other organisations registered on the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) e-waste management portal. The deadline for submission is May 19.
