From MLA to three-term CM, then PM, he has now surpassed former PM and Congress leader Indira Gandhi’s record as India’s second-longest serving Prime Minister. On Friday, Narendra Modi completed 4,078 days in office. Indira was in the office in an unbroken stint for 4,077 days, from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. Jawaharlal Nehru holds the record for the longest uninterrupted tenure as India’s first Prime Minister. Narendra Modi has equalled Nehru’s feat by leading his party to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.
Longest Serving PM From A Non-Hindi Speaking State
Narendra Modi is the only Prime Minister born post-India’s 1947 independence and the longest-serving Prime Minister hailing from a non-Hindi-speaking state. He is also India’s longest-serving non-Congress leader to complete two full terms in office. Another feather in his cap is for being the only non- Congress PM to have secured a clear majority on his own in the Lok Sabha election.
He is also the only non-Congress Prime Minister to have secured a clear majority on his own in a Lok Sabha election and the first incumbent Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi to win re-election with a majority.
Other Achievements
Political track record includes leading party to three consecutive national election victories (Jawaharlal Nehru has achieved this)
Including his time as Chief Minister, PM Modi has secured six consecutive election victories as his party’s leader- three in Gujarat and three nationally.
Vadnagar To Record
Born into a humble family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Narendra Modi aided his father in selling tea at a railway station before rising through the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Known for his deep connection to the party’s grassroots and his compelling communication style, Modi served as Gujarat’s chief minister for over a decade. In 2014, he assumed the role of Prime Minister, leading the BJP to a resounding victory with a clear majority. Since then, he has established himself as a prominent global leader, presenting India as a bold and confident voice on the international stage.
