Earlier today, railway officials reported that three rear compartments of the express train derailed after being hit from behind by a goods train locomotive. Rescue operations are ongoing at the site, approximately 30 km from North Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri station. Injured individuals are being transported to nearby hospitals. “Five people have died in the accident so far, and around 30 others have non-fatal injuries,” said a senior police officer.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw posted on X: “Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations are ongoing at a rapid pace. Railways, NDRF, and SDRF are working together closely. The injured are being taken to the hospital. Senior officials are on site.” The divisional railway manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway’s Katihar division reported that the 13174 Kanchanjunga Express, traveling from Agartala to Sealdah, was involved in the accident around 9 am.
One compartment of the express train detached during the collision and ended up on top of the goods train’s locomotive. Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, said, “Initial evidence suggests human error, likely due to signal disregard. Kavach needs to be widely implemented and planned for West Bengal.”
