Several new expressways are nearing completion in India. These are not just roads but are meant to boost the country’s rail network and improve connectivity. These greenfield expressways are being built in different states, promising to cut travel time between key metropolitan cities such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, etc.
Besides reducing journey hours, the upcoming expressways will significantly accelerate trade and tourism between different states. Here are the top 5 game-changer projects that will be open to the public in 2026.
Ganga Expressway
The 594-kilometer-long Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh is expected to be operational by early 2026. According to UPEIDA’s progress report, overall work on the Ganga Expressway is 90% complete. Once complete, it will become the longest expressway in the state.
Built at a cost of over Rs. 36,200 crore, the six-lane (expandable up to 8 lanes) Ganga Expressway starts from village Bijoli in Meerut district and ends at Judapur Dandu village in Prayagraj district in Uttar Pradesh. The journey, which currently takes about 12-13 hours to complete, will be reduced to just 6-7 hours after the construction of this expressway.
12 districts are set to benefit from the project, which include: Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahar, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rai Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj.
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: A large portion of the expressway is already operational. The crucial section linking Central Delhi to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is estimated to be completed by June 2026. The first 9-kilometre DND-Jaitpur stretch is now 94.23% complete. Meanwhile, the Delhi-Mumbai expressway’s 59-km DND-Faridabad-Sohna link is being constructed in three packages.
The 1,350-km-long corridor, an eight-lane, access-controlled highway, will have a design speed of 120 kmph and will be expandable to 12 lanes. It traverses the following states: Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, connecting the capital with Mumbai.
Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway
The much-awaited expressway project connecting Bengaluru and Chennai is expected to open to the public next year. After completion, travel time between the two key cities will be reduced from 6 to 7 hours to less than 4 hours. It will also speed up transport and logistics and strengthen economic and social ties between Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway
One of India’s most important expressways, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway, is set to be fully operational in 2026. Once complete, travel time from Delhi to Katra will drastically be reduced from 14 hours to just 6 to 7 hours, and from Amritsar, it will be just 4 hours. This expressway will majorly boost tourism in Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Jammu, and Delhi.
Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway
The 108-km-long Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, which will boost connectivity between Sardar Patel Ring Road in Ahmedabad and Adhelai village near Bhavnagar. Nearly 98 percent of the work on the stretch has been completed. Once operational, the journey between Ahmedabad and Dholera will take just 40 to 45 minutes.
