From CRPF Chief To Deputy NSA: The Man Set To Reinforce India’s Internal Security Grid

Anish Dayal Singh, former Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has been appointed as India’s Deputy National Security Adviser (NSA) in August 2025.

Senior IPS officer Anish Dayal Singh, who has previously served as CRPF chief, has been appointed as Deputy National Security Advisor (Deputy NSA). Singh, a 1988 batch officer of Manipur cadre, retired in December last year after over 30 years of service.

Dayal Singh has a long experience in the field of intelligence and security. He served for nearly three decades in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), where he specialised in internal security and counter-insurgency operations. Additionally, he has also headed two of the country's premier paramilitary forces, the ITBP and the CRPF.

As Deputy NSA, Singh will oversee key issues related to the country's internal security, including the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, combating Left Wing Extremism and tackling insurgency in the Northeast. He will join the strategic team that currently has former RAW chief Rajinder Khanna as the additional NSA, while the other two are retired IPS officer T V Ravichandran and former diplomat Pavan Kapoor as deputy NSAs, PTI reported.

As CRPF DG, Singh brought in several key reforms to improve the force's efficiency and connect with the public. He further strengthened the force's reach by setting up over 36 forward operating bases in Naxal-affected areas and raising four new battalions.

He also successfully managed the security preparations for the 2024 general elections and the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after the reorganisation. In a landmark initiative, he reorganised 130 battalions after nearly a decade, reducing the distance between battalion headquarters and their home bases from an average of 1,200 km to 500 km, not only speeding up operations but also allowing the jawans to spend more time with family.
