Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new Terminal 2 of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati during his two-day visit to Assam. The terminal has been built around the theme of ‘bamboo orchids’, bringing together Assamese art, sustainability and modern design. From the moment passengers enter, the airport offers a calm, green and visually striking travel experience inspired by nature.

Bamboo, orchids and Assamese culture
One of the most unique features of the new terminal is its extensive use of bamboo. About 140 metric tonnes of bamboo from the Northeast have been used for interior design and structural elements, highlighting eco-friendly construction and local craftsmanship.

Adding to the beauty are 57 orchid-shaped columns, inspired by Assam’s state flower, the Kopou Phool (foxtail orchid). These columns stand as a symbol of the state’s natural identity.

Passengers arriving at the terminal are greeted by cultural motifs inspired by Kaziranga National Park, including the famous one-horned rhinoceros. Other design elements include motifs of the traditional Japi hat and artistic depictions of Majuli Island, making the terminal deeply rooted in Assamese culture.
Sky forest and improved airport capacity
The highlight of the terminal is the ‘sky forest’, an indoor green space with nearly one lakh native plants. Designed to give travellers a forest-like feel, it creates a refreshing experience as soon as passengers step off their flights.

The new integrated terminal covers 1.4 lakh square metres and can handle 1.3 crore passengers every year. With upgraded runway and airfield facilities, the airport can now manage 34 air traffic movements per hour, the highest in the Northeast, boosting connectivity across the region.
