Mumbai: Darshan Solanki, a Indian Institute of Technology Bombay student, who allegedly committed suicide had told his mother that there was caste-based discrimination on the institute’s campus, a police chargesheet said.
As per the chargesheet, In a telephone conversation, he told his mother that the behaviour of fellow students changed when they got to know about his caste.
Solanki’s mother’s statement is part of the Police chargesheet. The Police filed it on Tuesday before a special court for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Police in its Chargesheet named fellow student Arman Khatri, he is on bail after being arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide.
Solanki, a B.Tech first-year student allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of the hostel building of IIT Bombay on February 12, a day after the semester exam ended.
As per the Police, accused Armann Khatri had allegedly threatened to kill him after he spoke against religion.
Solanki’s mother, in her statement to police, said that he had spoken about caste-based discrimination on college campuses when he visited them in January 2023.
As per her statement, he had also talked about the same with his sister.
The charge sheet also contained statements from 55 other witnesses, including some students and professors.
