Jammu and Kashmir: The higher reaches of Tulail Valley in north Kashmir’s Gurez sector received fresh snowfall on Sunday, ushering in a sharp drop in temperatures and intensifying winter’s grip on this high-altitude border region, officials said.
Snowfall commenced in the early hours and persisted intermittently, primarily blanketing the upper elevations of Tulail. While lower Gurez areas escaped the flakes, overcast skies and biting cold winds amplified the chill, with minimum temperatures dipping several notches below freezing.
Local residents noted a thin white veil draping the surrounding peaks, prompting extra precautions like heavier woolens and restricted outdoor activities. “The snow is a blessing for our water sources and fields, but the cold tests our endurance,” said Akbar Ali, a Gurez resident.
Officials in Bandipora confirmed the precipitation was light, causing no disruptions to roads, power, or essential services. However, they urged caution for travelers to higher reaches, warning of further temperature drops overnight—potentially to -8°C in upper areas—and slippery tracks.
The scenic transformation has drawn praise, with snow-capped Habba Khatoon Peak enhancing the valley’s ethereal allure. The Met Department forecasts prolonged cold wave conditions through the week, with light snowfall likely in isolated higher reaches amid active western disturbances.
