Former Union Minister Shriprakash Jaiswal passed away in Kanpur. He was 81. Jaiswal had served as coal minister in the Manmohan Singh government. The former minister died after a prolonged illness.
Jaiswal's health condition deteriorated in the day, the hospital authorities said, adding, that he was admitted to Kanpur Cardiology Hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

His mortal remains were taken at his residence, Lal Bangla.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief on his demise. He wrote on X, "The demise of former Union Minister and senior politician Shri Shripal Jaiswal Ji is extremely heartbreaking. Humble tribute to him! I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed soul be granted a place at His divine feet and that the bereaved family members be bestowed with the strength to endure this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!"
Jaiswal was born on September 25, 1944. He had a significant political career and got the opportunity to serve the people thrice as MP from Kanpur. He was elected in 1990, 2004 and 2009 for Lok Sabha.
Jaiswal held two key portfolios. He was Minister of State for Home between 2004-2009 and served as coal minister from 2011-2014.
He also held the post of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president between December 2000-July 2002.
