Former Chief Minister of Karnataka, SM Krishna, who served as Union Minister thrice passed away on Tuesday. He breathed his last at his residence in Bengaluru at 2.45 am. He passed away at the age of 92 due to prolonged illness.
He was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from October 11, 1999, to May 20, 2004, and served as the Governor of Maharashtra from December 6, 2004, to March 8, 2008. SM Krishna also served as the Minister of External Affairs from 2009 to 2012.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge expressed grief on demise of SM Krishna. He wrote on X, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri S.M. Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna was born on May 1, 1932, at Somanahalli village in Maddur taluk of Mandya district in Karnataka. He completed his Bachelor of Arts from Maharaja’s College, Mysore and obtained a law degree from University Law College. He further completed his studies from United States.
He was elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962 by winning Maddur Vidhan Sabha seat as an independent candidate.
Krishna was awarded the second highest civilian award of India, Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
