Former Planning Commission member economist Abhijit Sen passes away

New Delhi: Economist Abhijit Sen, a former member of the Planning Commission and one of the country’s foremost experts on rural economy, passed away on Monday night. He was 72 years old. His death was announced by his brother Dr Pranab Sen.

“He (Abhijit Sen) suffered a heart attack at around 11 pm. We took him to the hospital, but by the time we reached there everything was over,” Dr. Pranab Sen said.

Held many important government posts

In a career spanning more than four decades, Abhijit Sen taught economics at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and held several important government positions, including chairman of the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices. He was a member of the Planning Commission from 2004 to 2014, when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister.

Taught economics at several international universities

Abhijit Sen taught economic studies to students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 1985. He was considered a great scholar of rural economy. He also taught economics to students at universities of international repute such as Oxford, Cambridge and Essex.
