New Delhi: Former Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Sood on Tuesday took charge as the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He is a 1986 batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre.

Praveen replaced Subodh Kumar Jaiswal whose two-year term ended on May 25.

Praveen Sood was in highlight in March when Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar accused him of protecting the BJP government in the state. Congress Chief demanded the arrest of the Director General of Police. It was alleged that he was registering cases against Congress leaders deliberately.

IPS Praveen Sood, a resident of Himachal has done B. Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi. In his 37 years of service, Sood has held many important positions. He has been decorated with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011 and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002. Soon after taking charge, Sood interacted with CBI officials.

The CBI Director is appointed by a committee comprising the Prime Minister, the CJI and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for a fixed term of two years. The tenure can be extended up to five years.
