Former CJI BR Gavai: ‘Calling me anti-Hindu is completely wrong; I will not accept any government post’

While talking to the India Today Group, Gavai answered questions on hate speech, bulldozer justice, corruption in the judiciary, the shoe thrown at him, and the possibility of his entry into politics.

CJI on shoe attack

The former CJI said that he had no idea what the intent behind the shoe attack was, but calling him anti-Hindu is completely wrong. He said the shoe attack had no effect on him.

Gavai said he became more cautious with his remarks after the incident, as his statements were being circulated in a distorted form on social media. He said there should be regulation over the circulation of court remarks on social media.

Rule of law must prevail

While speaking on bulldozer justice, Gavai said that the rule of law must prevail over bulldozer justice, and it must be implemented in all circumstances. On PMLA cases, the former CJI favoured bail instead of jail.

Gavai on judicial corruption

On corruption in the judiciary, he said it is the responsibility of Parliament to expedite the investigation process and make the trial process more effective.

While dismissing allegations of bench-fixing in politically sensitive cases, Justice Gavai said, “No one called me, nor was there any kind of pressure. There was no interference in transfers or appointments.”

Former CJI on entering politics

When the CJI was asked whether he would accept a government post, he said that he would not accept any appointment as a Governor or a Rajya Sabha nomination. However, he did not rule out the possibility of joining politics.
