Panic spread across the Padhuwa police station area of Lakhimpur Kheri after a car crashed this morning near Ghazipur village. An Alto returning from a wedding lost control and plunged into the Sharda Canal. Six people were inside the vehicle when it fell in. With the gate locked, five of them drowned, while the driver was rescued and is in critical condition.
Deceased Identified
Various reports suggest that all the deceased were from UP’s Bahraich district. The accident occurred around 1 am on Wednesday. According to reports, the deceased are Jitendra (23), Ghanshyam (25), a resident of Ghaghra Barrage under the Sujauli police station in Bahraich, Lalji (45), and Suresh (50), residents of Sisian Purva. One of the deceased has not yet been identified. The car driver, identified as Bablu, remains in critical condition. He has been admitted to the Community Health Centre, Ramiya Behad, for treatment.
The victims were reportedly returning from a wedding in Lakhimpur when the accident occurred. Locals rushed to the spot after hearing the loud crash of the car plunging into the Sharda Canal and immediately informed the police. A team arrived at the scene, but by then, the car had completely submerged in the canal.
Villagers helped the rescue team
Villagers used boats and torchlight to reach the submerged car in the canal. They tied a rope to the vehicle and, with the help of the community, pulled it out. The victims were taken to CHC Ramiya Behad, where doctors declared five people dead. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. Police have begun investigating the cause of the accident.
