New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called it a big day for India’s democracy as a woman from the tribal community has assumed office of the President. President Draupadi Murmu took oath on Monday (July 25).

The Prime Minister hailed the President and said, “Today is a very big day for our democracy as the new President has been sworn in. For the first time after independence, a woman from tribal community is going to lead our country.”

PM Modi made the remarks while addressing a programme marking the 10th death anniversary of late Harmohan Singh Yadav.

The PM remembered Yadav and said, “When the country’s democracy was crushed during the Emergency, all the major parties came together and fought to save the Constitution. Chaudhary Harmohan Singh Yadav Ji was also a fighting soldier of that struggle,” PM Modi.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister wished her a fruitful Presidential tenure.

He said the assumption of President Murmu’s office is a watershed moment for India especially for the poor, marginalised and downtrodden.

He also said that in her assumption speech, the President emphasised on India’s accomplishments and presented a futuristic vision of the path ahead at a time when India is marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

The Prime Minister tweeted, “The entire nation watched with pride as Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji took oath as the President of India. Her assuming the Presidency is a watershed moment for India especially for the poor, marginalised and downtrodden. I wish her the very best for a fruitful Presidential tenure.”

“In her address after taking oath, President Droupadi Murmu Ji gave a message of hope and compassion. She emphasised on India’s accomplishments and presented a futuristic vision of the path ahead at a time when India is marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,” he added.
