First Suspected Case Of Mpox Sparks Concerns In India, Check What Health Ministry Says

New Delhi: India reported its first suspected case of mpox on 8 September, but officials said there was no reason for unnecessary concern. According to the Union Health Ministry, a young man who recently returned from a country where Mpox is spreading has been identified as a suspected case in India.

It has caused a few thousand cases and more than five hundred deaths in the ongoing outbreak of Mpox in Africa, for which the clade 1b is thought to be highly virulent, aggressive, and responsible with some 3.6 percent fatality rate among children, according to the WHO.

What Is Mpox?

The illness Mpox is a viral infection of both animals and humans. In its initial manifestations, it may start off with flu-like symptoms: fever, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue, thereby leading to pus-filled sores. In general, it lasts from two to four weeks.

Generally, Mpox spreads when there is contact with the infected person, animal, or items that have been contaminated. Prevention involves abstaining from sexual exposure to unknown individuals, avoiding individuals presenting with rashes or sores, frequent handwashing, and not sharing personal items with others.

These Are The Variations Of The Deadly Virus

A classification of the virus shows two clades of the monkeypox virus: I and II. The first clade appears only in Central Africa, while Clade II is further divided into subclades: IIa and IIb, formerly called the West African clade. Infections in the 2022 global outbreak were predominantly attributed to Clade IIb.

In the DRC, two subclades of Clade I are considered responsible for the mpox outbreak: Clade Ia and Clade Ib. Clade I mpox, which WHO investigated back in the 1980s, has an estimated mortality rate of around 10 percent, with most deaths taking place among children.

Here Are The Vaccines Available

Currently, protection against mpox includes two doses of the vaccine. The first dose is a vaccination, and 4 weeks later, one would get the second dose. In the United States, two vaccines are available: JYNNEOS also referred to as Imvamune or Imvanex, and ACAM2000, which may be used to reduce the risk and severity of infection with mpox.
