Manoj Sinha inaugurates the INOX multiplex

Aasif Suhaf, Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated Kashmir’s first ever multiplex cinema in Srinagar. He stated that each district in the UT will have 100-seater Cinema halls soon.

After inaugurated the first multiplex cinema at Shivpora area of Srinagar city, the LG Sinha, said that cinema lovers are everywhere in Kashmir and cinemas have a great history in the Valley. “There used to be a time when people in large numbers would come to watch movies along with friends and families. Cinemas would provide them opportunities to think big and dream big besides entertaining them”.

LG said in 1965, a Bollywood blockbuster of yesteryears, ‘Janwar’, starring famous Bollywood actor Shami Kapoor was screened at Broadway cinema. “Such was the love of Kappor for Kashmir that he had asked his family members to perform his last rites in Dal Lake, Srinagar”.

Gauri Matoo who’s father was the first Kashmiri who had started cinema in 1965 said “Kashmiri people remained entertainment starved for the past three decades and today, the first multiplex will provide the people of Valley a chance to relax and entertain themselves”

With the opening of this Multiplex, Kashmiris will get a chance to see movies on the Big screen after more than three decades. The valley used to be one of the most favourite destinations for the Bollywood directors to shoot. But with the start of Insurgency, the trend of film shootings stopped in the valley and also The cinema halls in the valley were completely shut.

Kashmir had around 15 cinema halls and all of them were closed decades ago. The owners of the Multiplex believe that all those cinemas which were closed down should be revived. ”It is after 32 years that cinema is returning to Kashmir. It’s a historic day and We are extremely happy personally, We used to contribute during our college days to go to see a movie, and now 50 percent of the people In Kashmir valley are those who must not have seen a movie in theatre. We want all these facilities to be provided to people here, which they get in Delhi and Mumbai or any other city. All those old cinemas need to be revived. I am very sure that all the people will be entertained here,” said Vikas Dhar, Owner Multiplex Kashmir.

The Multiplex located in Srinagar’s Shivpora area have three screens and a total seating capacity for around 520 people. The building is built as any Multiplex but with a touch of Kashmir in it. The owners have incorporated Kashmiri Traditional ‘Khatamband’ Ceiling and Paper Machie designs. The Multiplex has been inaugurated today by LG, while it will be thrown open for the general public after few days.
