New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday closed pleas of three female wrestlers filed against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The athletes whose petitions were turned down by the Supreme Court bench have represented India in pretigious events, reported LiveLaw. The bench was headed Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.
While closing the petitions, the bench noted that FIRs have been registered against the WFI chief on sexual assault charges already as urged by the wrestlers in their pleas.
Meanwhile, the bench granted liberty to the wrestlers to approach the jurisdictional magistrate or invoke the remedy under Section 482 CrPC before the Delhi High Court in case of any further grievances.
After which, the petitioners’ laywer Senior Advocate Narender Hooda urged the bench that they should keep eye on the matter while pointing out at the Delhi Police’s behaviour.
He cited that the police did not respond to petitioners’ complaints and booked the WFI chief for alleged sexual assault until the Supreme Court interfered.
To which, CJI replied, “We have only said that we are closing the proceedings at this stage, confining ourselves to the prayers. We have not said that this is not worthy of being monitored. You can approach the Magistrate or the Delhi HC if there are any issues,” quoted LiveLaw.
The court also took note that the Delhi Police has recorded statements of the complainants on May 3. Meanwhile, the minor grappler’s statement was recorded on April 29.
