Delhi Mayor election today: Following the Supreme Court’s order on the case, the much awaited Delhi Mayoral polls will be place on Wednesday after the three failed attempt by the municipal authority to organise the election to the top post.
As the Supreme Court intervened and directed that the election for Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi be held first, voting would begin at 11 a.m. The court also stated that the aldermen (nominated individuals) would not be able to vote. Due to political squabbles between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the last three attempts to elect the Mayor failed. On January 6, the civic centre convened for the first time.
The civic body convened for the first time on January 6, the second time on January 24, and the final time on February 6.
The Aam Aadmi Party, which won the MCD elections with 134 seats, has nominated Shelly Oberoi for mayor, while the BJP has nominated Rekha Gupta, a three-term councillor from Shalimar Bagh.
Presiding officer Satya Sharma of the BJP delivered the oath to the aldermen, the members selected by Lt Governor Vinai Saxena, before administering the oath to the elected councillors at the previous meeting.

Following that, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi LG’s decision to allow the nominated members to vote, and the top court issued a notice to the LG on February 8.
Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister, had also filed a proposal to the LG to hold polls on February 22, which was granted on February 18.
Elections for the mayor, deputy mayor, and six members of the standing committee will be held on February 22nd, according to the Lieutenant Governor’s order.
“As proposed by the Chief Minister, GNCTD, I approve the proposal to call the adjourned first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 11 a.m. for the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and six members to the Standing Committee,” the order stated previously.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud further asked the appropriate body to publish a notice for the mayor’s election.
The Municipal House must convene within a month following the conclusion of the civic elections to elect the mayor, according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act. However, the election has been postponed three times due to a disagreement over the voting rights of nominated members.
