A Faridabad-based man was fined Rs 1.25 lakh for feeding a dog in a public place, the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) said on X. The fine became viral after the Supreme Court of India passed an order that feeding dogs on the road is not permitted. In his order, the Apex Court directed the Municipal Corporation in the Delhi National Capital Region to establish a designated spot for stray dogs, where people can feed them.
“Under no condition shall the feeding of stray dogs on the streets be permitted,” stated a special three-judge bench led by Justice Vikram Nath. The court also stated that anyone caught feeding stray dogs in a public place will be penalized.
According to media reports, the woman identified as Divya Nayak has been feeding 40 stray dogs in her society since 2022. The RWA was opposing her act, and this led to arguments between the dog lover and residents multiple times.
The woman alleged in her social media post that she was allegedly assaulted for feeding stray dogs. When the incident was reported to police, they also asked her to stop feeding. According to Nayak, there are several dogs that are not getting food in the society.
Reacting to the allegations, RWA vice president Ramanik Chahal said Nayak was not feeding the stray dogs at the designated place. She was feeding dogs wherever she wanted, which caused inconvenience for others. According to the Supreme Court ruling, sterilization and vaccination are compulsory for stray dogs.
