During a thunderstorm in Malda and Murshidabad in West Bengal on Thursday, lightning struck, resulting in the deaths of twelve individuals, including three women and three minors, and injuring five others. Malda witnessed the majority of the fatalities, with 11 deaths reported.

Rescue teams from the disaster management department were dispatched to assist the injured. In Malda, lightning struck several individuals who were picking mangoes, including Monojit Mondal (21), Samar Mridha (16), Chandan Sahani (35), Asit Saha (19), Atul Mandal (65), and Sabidul Sk (13).
Lightning struck Priyanka Singha (20) and Nyan Roy while they were in a field. Sumitra Mandal (45) sustained injuries outside her home due to lightning. Suitara Biwi was in a field when struck by lightning, and Pankaj Mandal (24) was on the road when the lightning hit. A Budhia woman and a Class 8 boy suffered injuries as well.
In Murshidabad, Simanta Ghosh (32) lost his life, and three individuals sustained injuries while herding cattle. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee posted on X, expressing condolences to the families affected by the tragic lightning strikes in Malda. She extended her deepest sympathies during this challenging time and conveyed thoughts and prayers for the injured individuals, hoping for their swift recovery. Mamata Banerjee stated that the district administration is working tirelessly to offer all necessary assistance to those affected, affirming the commitment to providing support to those in need.
