National Conference president Farooq Abdullah confirmed on Thursday, August 22, that his party’s alliance with Congress is finalized for all 90 seats in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, scheduled for September 18, 25, and October 1. The pre-poll alliance will be officially signed in the presence of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.

Alliance Open to PDP Participation

While the alliance primarily includes the National Conference, Congress, and CPI(M) leader MY Tarigami, Abdullah did not rule out the possibility of the Mehbooba Mufti-led People’s Democratic Party (PDP) joining either before or after the elections.

Focus on Restoring Statehood

Abdullah emphasized the commitment to restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, a key priority for both the Congress and the INDIA bloc, expressing hope that this would come with full powers.

No Common Minimum Programme

When asked about a common minimum programme for the alliance, Abdullah stated that their primary goal is to fight the elections and defeat divisive forces. He suggested that seat-sharing details would be finalized before the first phase of the elections and remained non-committal on whether he would contest.
