What Is The Update On Farmers Protest
In response to stone-throwing protesters, tear gas shells were deployed, and police resorted to lathi charges when farmers were prevented from advancing towards Khanauri on the Punjab border, as per news agency PTI. Thousands reportedly gathered at the Shambhu border crossing, gearing up for the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.
This incident follows demands for a legal assurance of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and appeals for waivers on farm loans, pensions, and the reversal of increased electricity rates, among other requests. Farmers, responding to calls from Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been stationed at the Punjab border for the past few days.
Samyukta Kisan Morcha Marked Today As A “Black Day
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) marked today as a “black day” and symbolically burned effigies of BJP leaders in protest against the Haryana Police’s actions towards the protesting farmers at two of the state’s border points. The SKM called for this action to mourn the death of Shubhkaran Singh, who lost his life in clashes between Haryana Police and farmers from Punjab. Singh, aged 21 and a native of Bathinda, was fatally injured, and 12 police personnel were injured in clashes at the Khanauri border point on the Punjab-Haryana border on Wednesday. The clash occurred when some protesting farmers attempted to breach barricades.
What Did Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Say?
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared that Shubhkaran’s sister would receive a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job. “The family of Shubhkaran Singh, who lost his life during the farmers’ movement at the Khanauri border, will receive financial aid of Rs 1 crore from the Punjab government, along with a government job for his younger sister. Appropriate legal measures will be pursued against those responsible,” Mann stated in a Punjabi-language post.
