The family of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi reportedly spends around ₹35-40 lakh per year on his upkeep while he is incarcerated, according to his cousin, Ramesh Bishnoi. Speaking with The Indian Express, Ramesh, 50, expressed disbelief over Lawrence’s transformation into a criminal, stating that the family “never imagined” such a future for him.
Lawrence Bishnoi’s Background
Lawrence Bishnoi, whose real name is Balkaran Brar, was born in Firozpur, Punjab. His name was changed during his school years based on his aunt’s suggestion, as she thought ‘Lawrence’ sounded better. Bishnoi, now 31, is a law graduate from Panjab University and comes from a well-off family. His father, a former constable in the Haryana Police, owns 110 acres of land, and the family has always lived in affluence.
Criminal Ties and High-Profile Cases
In recent years, Lawrence Bishnoi’s name has been linked to various criminal activities, including the assassination of Maharashtra politician Baba Siddique. Siddique, a close friend of Bollywood actor Salman Khan, was shot dead in Mumbai last week, and Khan’s friendship with the politician is believed to have played a role in the murder.

Additionally, the Canadian Police have accused members of the Bishnoi gang of engaging in violent activities on Canadian soil in collaboration with “agents” of the Indian government, a charge that India has denied. Bishnoi’s gang is also allegedly responsible for the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in May 2022.
Where is Lawrence Bishnoi Now?
Lawrence Bishnoi is currently held in Gujarat’s Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad. He is being investigated by the state’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for various cases. In August 2023, the Union Home Ministry extended an order preventing Bishnoi from being moved out of the prison for any reason for another year.
