The Mahayuti, known as the NDA in Maharashtra, faced significant electoral setbacks in the state. In the recent elections, the BJP managed to secure only nine Lok Sabha seats, down from the 22 won in 2019, while the Shiv Sena led by Shinde emerged victorious in seven seats and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar could only secure one seat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition had won a total of 41 out of 48 seats in the state.
Two days ago, Devendra Fadnavis had offered to resign, but chief minister Eknath Shinde stated that the electoral defeat was a collective responsibility of the alliance. Shinde added that he would soon have a discussion with his deputy.
Shinde mentioned that Fadnavis wants to concentrate on rebuilding the party for the upcoming assembly elections later this year, and they will assess the reasons behind the Mahayuti’s defeat. He emphasized their continued collaboration, saying, “We have worked together in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Failures should not demoralize us.”
